Wild pepper Voatsiperifery

With our project and coolaboration with the
University of Florence - Dipartimento di Scienze
Produzioni Agroalimentari e dell’Ambiente
(DISPAA) dell’Università degli Studi di Firenze
we combine our knowledge in sustainable
cultivation and harvesting, and are committed to
helping producers to reach the goal to fight with
education and responsibility against the
deforestation. Our passion for responsibility
extends beyond operating our business in a safe,
respectful manner.

Harvesting process of the wild pepper Voatsiperifery

The harvesting is done by hand while climbing at the top of the trees, it proves
particularly dangerous and perilous because it could be done at more than 20
meters of altitude.

In some areas of production, this operation consists more in the pure and simple
cutting of the vine, or even the tutor tree, which nevertheless takes years to reach
maturity.
There is no sustainability in those practices.

As part of a sustainable management of the supply chain, Sambava Épices
collaborates with suppliers who work in the conservation of the environment,
particularly in the framework of development of domestication project of the wild
pepper as well as giving to the collectors means of secure, modern and ecological
harvests.

Sambava Épices has directly selected the production zones it uses, and today it is
one of few companies in Madagascar to carry out the sustainable harvesting of the
product.

Domestication

To fully avoid the risks connected with the wild
pepper exploitation Sambava Épices started two
years ago; with the help and support of a local
NGO; a project focused on the domestication
and controlled cultivation of the wild pepper
based on the following steps:
